Africa gets a new tool to block gambling access

Gamble-Pause launches a Pan-African app designed to help users restrict access to betting platforms and support safer gambling habits

A new responsible gambling initiative is targeting one of the challenges created by the rapid expansion of online betting across Africa. Gamble-Pause, the Safer Gaming Charity Partner of World Gaming, has launched what it describes as the continent’s first Pan-African gambling-blocking application.

The Gamble-Pause App is designed to give users a single tool for limiting access to gambling services, rather than relying exclusively on self-exclusion systems operated by individual betting companies or within separate jurisdictions.

One platform for multiple gambling environments

According to Gamble-Pause, users can voluntarily block access to both licensed gambling operators and unlicensed or offshore platforms for a minimum period of one year.

A central element of the app is its Pan-African Guard, which uses a database of gambling websites to identify and restrict access to operators outside the regulated market. The database is intended to be continuously updated, with users also able to report gambling platforms they believe are operating illegally.

The protection extends beyond traditional sportsbooks and casino sites. The application also targets prediction-market platforms and other services that could act as gambling triggers.

Another feature is aimed at families, with parents and guardians able to activate device-level controls intended to reduce the risk of underage users accessing gambling content.

Focus on long-term player protection

Gamble-Pause is positioning the application as more than a simple website blocker. Users receive access to a personal dashboard where they can track their progress and monitor their activity.

The platform also incorporates features such as streak tracking, achievement badges and milestones, with the aim of encouraging users to maintain healthier habits over time.

Support and educational resources are available through the application, including live chat and telephone assistance. Gamble-Pause says these services are intended to connect users with responsible gambling and counselling support in local languages.

Accessibility is another major part of the project. The app currently supports more than 40 African languages, while its language system can recommend preferences based on a user’s location.

Technology designed for mobile use

With smartphones playing a major role in the growth of online gambling across the continent, the developers have also focused on ensuring that the application continues functioning when devices activate battery-saving features or restrict background activity.

The company says the app has been optimised to maintain its protective functions without placing a significant burden on the user’s device.

Ladipo Abiose Akolade, Founder of Gamble-Pause, said the application is intended to offer broader protection than conventional self-exclusion schemes, particularly by covering both regulated and offshore gambling environments.

The organisation plans to further develop the platform with stronger detection of illegal operators, additional language options, financial literacy resources and expanded intervention and recovery tools.

The launch comes as responsible gambling and player protection become increasingly important topics for African betting markets, where the rapid growth of mobile access is creating new challenges for regulators, operators and consumers alike.
